The Florida Medical Association (FMA) is a professional organization that is devoted to providing leadership, advocacy, patient care, and physician education. Established in 1904 as the Florida Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons, the FMA is now the third largest state osteopathic medical association in the United States. The mission of the FMA is to protect Florida's public health, education, and doctors through the uniqueness of osteopathic principles and practices in all medical and surgical specialties. The Political Action Committee (PAC) of the FMA works to help pro-medical candidates get elected to the Florida Legislature.
The PAC believes that doctors should have complete autonomy when it comes to the practice of medicine, and that nothing is more important than their ability to provide compassionate, high-quality care to their patients. To this end, they help candidates who support the medical profession win their elections. The Foundation for Healthy Floridians is a 501(c)(charitable) organization that supports the FMA's mission. All donations are tax-deductible and can be made by calling the toll-free number (800-435-735).
The Foundation also provides financial support to those affected by natural disasters such as Hurricane Ian. The Medical Disaster Relief Fund helps doctors' offices rebuild, reopen, and heal their communities. The American Medical Association (AMA) has also been a major influence on the FMA's mission. The AMA has been guiding the association for 167 years, from winning the fight against “widespread quackery” in the 19th century to the Flexner Report, from the war on tobacco in the mid-20th century to the compassionate treatment of AIDS patients.
The Alliance from John County Medical Society has also been a major supporter of the FMA. They have awarded four scholarships to students studying in the medical field and continue to provide financial support to three others. The FMA is committed to providing leadership, advocacy, patient care, and physician education for all Floridians. Through its mission statement and its various initiatives, it strives to ensure that doctors have complete autonomy when it comes to providing quality care for their patients. The FMA is dedicated to protecting public health, education, and doctors through its commitment to osteopathic principles and practices in all medical and surgical specialties.
Its Political Action Committee works hard to ensure that pro-medical candidates are elected into office in Florida while its Foundation for Healthy Floridians provides financial support for those affected by natural disasters such as Hurricane Ian. Additionally, its alliance with John County Medical Society has awarded four scholarships and continues to provide financial support for three others. Ultimately, the FMA is devoted to providing quality care for all Floridians.
